Headaches: 4 Ways to Prevent and Treat them Without Medications

January 28, 2016, 4:16 pm

Headaches are common, NOT normal.  And because they are so common, many people think that getting a headache is just a normal part of life!  It doesn’t have to be……

Four Ways to Prevent and Treat Headaches Without Medications:

  1. Drink more Water!  Most people do not drink enough water every day and dehydration can lead to headaches. Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day and make sure you are drinking at least 8 cups (64 oz.) each day.
  2. Take breaks from electronic devices.  Yes, you heard me.  When you are constantly looking at a computer, and especially looking down at a phone or tablet, the muscles in your neck and eyes get strained.  Taking short breaks and stretching your neck for a minute will make a difference (and feels great!)
  3. Acupuncture/acupressure.  Studies have shown acupuncture to be an effective treatment for headaches.  We have had much success at our clinic treating headache patients with acupuncture or acupressure, especially when combined with chiropractic care.
  4. Chiropractic adjustments. Many people find headache relief with chiropractic care.  The Institute of Chiropractic and Acupuncture headache, woman in painTherapy has helped many people get drug-free results, drastically reducing or totally eliminating patient’s headaches!  Some estimates suggest that 25% of the population has a headache right now…are you one of them?

Headaches are most often a sign that something is not right in your body.  There are many types of headaches and many things can cause them. Medications may cover up the pain, but do not correct the underlying cause. If you can treat the cause of the headache, it will go away!

To See How Dr. Burrup Lost 46 lbs and Trained Only 3 Days a Week for his Marathon, READ ON…

January 25, 2016, 5:42 pm

Dr. Burrup ran his first marathon in St. George on October 4th, 2014.  He lost 46 pounds in preparation for the marathon and used a simple training program that required very little time compared to most marathon training programs.

Dr. Burrup had been interested in running for a while, but had not considered a marathon until he came across a training program that did NOT take up hours and hours of his time every week.  The basic program is this: one long run each week, increasing your miles as you go, and two short 30-minute runs each week to keep up your conditioning. That’s all there is to it!  Here is an article that explains this more in detail:

Marathoning Made Simple http://www.trinewbies.com/tno_running/tno_runarticle_09.asp

Dr. Burrup also lost 46 lbs in preparation to run the marathon by using the Fast Metabolism Diet by Haylie Pomroy.  Dr. Burrup has successfully used other diets in the past, but found that this one has been the easiest to stay on!  The theory behind this diet is that by changing the types of foods you eat throughout the week, you keep your metabolism guessing, which helps it to work faster.  This is similar to “muscle confusion” when weight lifting, to keep your muscles building instead of plateauing.  For more information on this diet please visit hayliepomroy.com.

5 Ways to Reduce Your Risk for Sciatica

January 21, 2016, 9:26 pm

Sciatica describes persistent pain felt along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, down through the buttock, and into the lower leg.  The Sciatic Nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the body.  Sciatic pain usually develops as a result of general wear and tear and use of the lower spine, not as a result of injury.

Low pack pain imageThe 5 Best Ways to Reduce Your Risk for Sciatica are:

  1. Maintain proper posture:  People who have good posture allow their body to have proper nerve and blood flow, which can be impaired by prolonged poor posture.  Poor posture can cause aching, pain, and impaired nerve function over time.
  2. Exercise regularly:  The risk for sciatica decreases when the muscles and tissues of the body are strong and healthy.
  3. Maintain a healthy diet and weight:  I know, the last thing you want to hear.  But it is true!  The better you eat, the better the body works, and a proper weight puts less pressure on nerves and blood flow, which can directly affect sciatica.
  4. Use good body mechanics when lifting:  Injury is less common as a reason for developing sciatica, however, when injury is involved, poor lifting techniques are a common reason for the injury that leads to sciatica.
  5. Get regular chiropractic care:  Chiropractic adjustments offer a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option and preventive care for sciatica.  The goal of chiropractic treatment is to restore or maintain spinal movement, thereby improving function while decreasing any pain and inflammation.  Depending on the cause of the sciatica, your chiropractor may also use ice/heat therapy, TENS, ultrasound, and rehabilitation exercises in addition to chiropractic adjustments in your treatment.

While it is not always possible to prevent sciatica, these suggestions improve spinal health and overall health of the body.

The Institute of Chiropractic and Acupuncture Therapy provides chiropractic and wellness care for sciatica and many other conditions.  We provide service to patients in West Jordan and the Salt Lake City Metro area.  Come experience the difference at The Institute!

Got NECK PAIN? We Can Help!

January 19, 2016, 11:50 pm

Whiplash, woman holding neckIs it hard to look over your shoulder? Is there a constant throbbing in your neck or head? Do you notice a “grinding” sound as you turn your head? Sounds like you may need some help….

Neck Pain is one of the most common reasons people visit their chiropractic or medical physician.  A popular response to neck pain is taking pain relievers or muscle relaxers to cover up the problem.  However, neck pain isn’t caused by a lack of pain pills!

Studies show that one of the most effective treatments for neck pain is chiropractic adjustments. A chiropractor can locate the underlying cause of the neck pain and uses specific chiropractic adjustments to restore proper function of the neck.  With improved structure and function, neck pain often diminished or totally disappears, without drugs and their potential side effects.

Other helps for neck pain include heat/ice and massage.  While these therapies can do a lot to lessen neck pain (and we highly recommend them), they will not actually correct the problem as a chiropractic adjustment can.  We recommend them in addition to receiving adjustments by your chiropractor.

You don’t have to live with Neck Pain!  Look into chiropractic today and see what it can to do help you!

3 Ways Chiropractic Can Help Runners

January 15, 2016, 7:42 pm

St. George Marathon 10.4.14 2014-10-04 025Running is a favorite form of exercise for many people.  Simply put, it is popular because it can be done almost anywhere, burns up lots of calories, and uses no special equipment.  Running is also great for your health…it helps decrease stress, control weight, increase stamina and energy, and is great for your heart.

The downside of the benefits is that running causes its share of injuries to the body.

Tendonitis, ankle sprains, shin splints, and knee strains are a few of the many injuries brought on or exacerbated by a regular running routine.

So what do you do? It’s important to take precautions to not get injured in the first place. Running in high quality shoes, stretching, and knowing your body’s limits are 3 ways to help reduce injuries.

Another great choice is getting regular chiropractic care. Runners can reap many positive benefits from visiting a chiropractor. Three big benefits chiropractic care offers to runners and other athletes are the following:

Increased Range of Motion: Chiropractic care helps improve range of motion. Loose and relaxed joints allow for greater flexibility and movement.  This will in turn benefit a runner’s gait and running time. Unrestricted joints and better range of motion will help a runner move more freely and help avoid running injuries.

Decreased Healing Time for Injuries: By using chiropractic adjustments, chiropractors can promote healing in the body as a whole, as well as treating specific injuries.  Specific chiropractic treatments can include extremity adjustments and laser therapy to decrease pain and accelerate healing.  This allows runners to get back to running quicker and minimize time lost in improving times or preparing for races.

More Resistance to Becoming Injured: One common way runners get hurt is by one part of the body compensating for another. Chiropractic treatment helps to keep the spine and extremities in alignment, allowing all parts of the body to function properly, and reduces the negative impact of the jarring motion of running.

Running is a popular exercise routine for many, and has many positive benefits in a person’s health and well-being. By taking proper steps to minimize the chance of injury, runners can enjoy the benefits of running and minimize the risks.

Chiropractic care can be an effective part of making certain your body is in prime running condition and resistant to injury. If a person does get an injury, chiropractic care can help increase healing time and decrease time needed to recover.

Nervous About Acupuncture? Watch this Video….

January 11, 2016, 5:17 pm

Ever been nervous to try acupuncture?  Many people are!  Click on the video below to see an acupuncture treatment by Dr. Trent Burrup and see how small the needles really are.

Hundreds of clinical studies on the benefits of acupuncture show that it successfully treats conditions ranging from musculoskeletal problems (back pain, neck pain, and others) to nausea, migraine headache, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and infertility.

Acupuncture helps balance the flow of energy in the body, which promotes the body’s natural self-healing process.  This is done by working with the meridian systems of the body (energy channels) and specific acupuncture points on those meridians.  There are many different ways to do acupuncture and balance the flow of energy using needles, lasers, herbs, electrical stimulation, or massage.

Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health and focuses as much on the prevention of illness as on the treatment.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture is used in every aspect of health care.

Dr. Trent Burrup is a chiropractor and also a certified acupuncturist through the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture.

Chiropractic…What Conditions Does it Help With?

January 8, 2016, 4:13 pm

Chiropractors are often thought of as back doctors and have tremendous success treating back pain, neck pain, and headaches.  However, since the primary focus of your care is improved nervous system function, chiropractic can have a positive effect on many other health conditions not typically associated with chiropractic.

Many people come to see us because they have had little or no response to medical treatment or other chiropractic treatments.  Here are some common conditions we see in our clinic that have had successful outcomes with chiropractic:

Headaches              About the Doctor for square box                 Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Back and neck pain                   Fibromyalgia

Auto injuries/whiplash                Hormone Imbalances

There are many different chiropractic techniques that may be used for adjustments.  At The Institute some of the specific chiropractic techniques and methods Dr. Burrup has been trained in include Gonstead, Diversified, Thompson, Activator, Toggle Recoil, Nimmo, sports injury and extremity adjustment.

The goal of our clinic is to help our patients become empowered with their health, achieving their optimal wellness goals.  If you are suffering needlessly from pain, have a condition that has not responded well to medical care or other chiropractic treatments, or are trying to achieve optimal wellness in your life, chiropractic can help you on the road back to better health!

Eating Better this New Year?

January 5, 2016, 10:52 pm

Food image for Individual Page on NutritionThis is the time of year that almost everyone starts eating better.  Sadly it usually doesn’t last very long!  What can you do to make it permanent?  Find healthy food that you like (it IS possible) and slowly replace the junk…make it a lifestyle change, a little at a time.  That is the only way to have changes that last for your health, your weight, and how you feel every day.

Many of our chronic health problems are a result of nutritional deficiencies.  Eating too much junk food and not enough nutrient rich foods. If organs in the body are not getting the nutrients they need, over time they begin to wear out and break down, ultimately leading to disease. The best source of nutrition is from healthy food.  However, the typical diet of most Americans is not healthy!

For this reason, nutritional supplementation can also be very beneficial, and for some it is a must.  However, the quality of a nutritional supplement is extremely important.  Some supplements are made from whole foods and some are synthetically made chemicals.   Synthetic vitamins only contain one small chemically made portion of the vitamin complex, whereas whole food supplements contain the whole vitamin complex (the vitamin plus what the body needs to actually use it).  Whole food nutritional supplements are far superior to synthetic vitamins.

Proper nutrition, in addition to regular adjustments by your chiropractor can help prevent disease, balance the body so it can heal itself and overcome physical and emotional stress and illnesses, and most importantly…you will feel better!

At The Institute, in addition to chiropractic and wellness therapies, Dr. Burrup educates and counsels our patients on how to make healthy lifestyle and diet choices, leading to more energy, fewer health problems, weight loss (or gain when needed), and overall better health.  Good Nutrition and Chiropractic Care really do make a Healthy Lifestyle!
