Chiropractic and Digestion

October 31, 2016, 10:21 pm

Over $80 billion are spent each year on drugs to relieve heartburn, bloating, gas, acid reflux, irritable bowel, diarrhea, constipation, and other digestive disorders. These symptoms of abnormalNutrition and Chiropractic, Vegetables from Garden image digestion are becoming ever more prevalent in our society. Science and research have shown that chiropractic care offers a powerful solution to this modern-day epidemic.

The nervous system of your body controls digestive function from nerves that come out of the brain stem, down through your vertebrae (back bones), and from there out to your digestive organs. A misalignment in your spine can lead to compromised nerves which can alter digestive function.

Wellness oriented chiropractors search and find the location of such spinal misalignments termed `subluxations.` A specific chiropractic adjustment realigns the altered region(s) of your spine and restores nerve supply to the deficient organs. This chiropractic approach honors the body’s innate ability to heal by enhancing organ function & quality of life.

Several studies have demonstrated the power of chiropractic adjustments restoring optimal function in individuals with digestive problems. In one published case study, a young woman had been afflicted with irritable bowel symptoms once or twice a week for 5 years. After one chiropractic adjustment she noticed an easing of symptoms and within a short time all her digestive problems disappeared. When the report was published 2 years later she was still symptom free.

Another case study showed that chiropractic care can be effective for infants with digestive disturbances. Researchers chose three infants who were experiencing infrequent bowel movements with resulting distress.  Parents of these infants had reported following medication regimens and diet changes without any results. The infants began chiropractic care and all three experienced almost immediate improvement. By the end of the study all three had bowel movements at least once every day.

Subluxations within specific areas of the spine can prevent the bowel and other digestive organs from functioning properly. Regular chiropractic care can help patients prevent and treat a wide range of digestive issues.  For more information on how chiropractic can help you, please visit our home page at SuperDocDC.com.

4 Ways to Prevent and Treat HEADACHES Without Medications

October 29, 2016, 3:39 pm

Headaches are common, NOT normal.  And because they are so common, most people think that getting a headache is just a normal part of life!  It doesn’t have to be……

Four Ways to Prevent and Treat Headaches Without Medications:Headache, man holding front of head, Chiropractic and Acupuncture Institute

  1. Drink more Water.  Most people do not consume enough water each day and dehydration can lead to headaches. Keep a water bottle with you during the day and drink at least 8 cups (64 oz.) every day.
  2. Take a break from electronic devices.  When you are continuously looking at a computer, and especially when looking down at a phone or tablet, the muscles in your eyes and neck get strained.  Taking short breaks and stretching your neck for a few minutes will make a big difference (and feels great!)
  3. Acupuncture/acupressure.  Research shows acupuncture to be an effective treatment for headaches.  We have had a lot of success at our clinic treating patients who have headaches with acupuncture or acupressure, especially when combined with chiropractic care.
  4. Chiropractic adjustments. Many people find relief from their headaches with chiropractic adjustments.  The Institute of Chiropractic and Acupuncture Therapy has helped many people get drug-free results, drastically reducing and/or totally eliminating their headaches!  Some estimates suggest that 25% of the population has a headache right now…are you one of them?

Headaches are most often a sign that something is not right in your body.  There are many types of headaches and many things can cause them. Medications cover up the pain, but don’t correct the underlying cause. If you can treat the cause of the headache, it will go away!

Acupuncture: What Is It Used For?

October 24, 2016, 4:19 pm

At The Institute of Chiropractic and Acupuncture Therapy, we have had tremendous success helping people with a variety of health concerns, many of which have not responded well to traditional Western medicine.  Hundreds of clinical studies on the BENEFITS OF ACUPUNCTURE show that it successfully treats conditions ranging from musculoskeletal problems (back pain, neck pain, and others) to nausea, migraine headache, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and infertility.  Chiropractor and acupuncturist, Dr. Trent Burrup, treats all these conditions and many others with acupuncture, as well as chiropractic and other holistic therapies.

The following links have great information on acupuncture and LISTS OF SPECIFIC CONDITIONS it can be used for.  These links are from the medical schools of UC San Diego and the University of Miami.

Acupuncture helps balance the flow of energy in the body, which promotes the body’s natural self-healing process.  This is done by working with the meridian systems of the body and specific acupuncture points on those meridians.  Meridians are energy channels through which energy flows and if the energy flow is balanced, one should be healthy.  There are many different ways to balance the flow of energy which include needles, lasers, herbs, electrical stimulation, and massage.

Acupuncture is a holistic approach to understanding normal function and disease processes and focuses as much on the prevention of illness as on the treatment.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture is used in every aspect of health care.

Acupuncture Without Needles…..Really!

October 21, 2016, 11:34 am

Have you ever been nervous about acupuncture? Learn about NEEDLE-LESS ACUPUNCTURE and what alternatives can be used instead of needles for acupuncture.

But first…here is the truth about needles: The needles used in acupuncture are very small compared to needles used for getting shots or drawing blood.  Six to ten acupuncture needles will fit inside a standard hypodermic needle used for drawing blood.  They are very thin and, depending on the style of acupuncture used, can be inserted a couple of millimeters or a full inch into the acupoint.  Many people do not feel the acupuncture needles when they are inserted. Those that do feel any discomfort equate it with that of a small pinch during the acupuncture treatment.

However, Needles Do Not Have to be Used in Acupuncture. Some of the other forms of stimulation to acupuncture points include laser light, electrical impulses, firm rubbing or pressure, tapping the point, or taping an object to the point such as a small metal ball.

Chiropractic and Sciatica: 5 Best Ways to Reduce Your Risk

October 19, 2016, 9:38 pm

Sciatica is constant, persistent pain along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, through the buttock, and into the lower leg.  The Sciatic Nerve is the longest and widest nerve in your body.  Sciatic pain usually develops from general use, and wear and tear  of your lower spine, not as a result of injury.

Low Back Pain image, man holding low back5 Best Ways to Reduce Your Risk for Sciatica:

  1. Maintain proper posture:  People who have good posture help their body to have proper nerve and blood flow, which may be impaired by prolonged poor posture.  Poor posture can cause aching, pain, and impaired nerve function over time.
  2. Exercise regularly:  The risk for sciatica is much lower when the muscles and tissues of your body are strong and healthy.
  3. Maintain a healthy diet and weight:  I know, the last thing you want to hear…but it is so true!  The better you eat, the better the body works, and a healthy weight puts less pressure on nerves and blood flow, directly affecting the sciatic nerve.
  4. Use good body mechanics when lifting:  Injury is less common as a reason for developing sciatica.  However, when injury is involved, poor lifting techniques are a common reason for injury that leads to sciatica.
  5. Get regular chiropractic care:  Chiropractic adjustments offer a drug-free, non-invasive treatment option as well as preventive care for sciatica.  The goal of chiropractic treatment is to restore/maintain spinal movement, which improves function while decreasing pain and inflammation.  Depending on the cause of the sciatica, your chiropractor may use ice/heat therapy, ultrasound, and rehab exercises in addition to chiropractic adjustments in your treatment.

While it is not always possible to prevent sciatica, these suggestions improve spinal health and the overall health of the body, and can greatly lower your risk for developing sciatica.

The Institute of Chiropractic and Acupuncture Therapy provides chiropractic and wellness care for sciatica and many other conditions.  We provide chiropractic and other wellness services to patients in West Jordan and the Salt Lake City Metro area.  Come experience the difference at The Institute!

Chiropractic for Joint Pain

October 14, 2016, 10:08 pm

Did you know that Chiropractic can be very effective for Joint Pain?  Chiropractic is associated with back and neck pain, but is also effective for pain in joints and extremities.  Many chiropractors are able to treat joint pain, in fact, the spine and skull are made up of joints! Joints are where two bones connect with each other.  They are the space between the bones that allow for proper movement and function.  Your body has three main types of joints: Fixed Joints that barely move, such as the sutures in your skull; Cartilaginous Joints that are between joints that are joined by cartilage (see diagram); and Synovial Joints that move in many different directions, such as your shoulder, hip, elbow, ankle joints, etc.  When the joints move properly, your muscles and ligaments function at optimal levels, affording you no pain.  However, when the joints do not work properly, this leads to many problems.  When joints do not work properly, muscles and ligaments cannot function properly either.  They may shorten or elongate, depending on the underlying joint problem, leading to irritation of local tissues and nerves.  This leads to pain and dysfunction that compounds until the underlying issue is resolved.

Chiropractic Joint Pain
What causes joints not to work properly?  There are three main factors that cause joint dysfunction.  Mechanical dysfunction occurs with macro trauma (big trauma) such as an auto accident or other injury, and micro trauma as in repetitive use injury (i.e. carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow). Chemical factors include diet and environmental toxins.  If your diet is inflammatory, your joints will be more likely to swell easier and be more susceptible to injury.  Mental stress affects hormones, chemicals, muscle tension, stomach acid, etc. Stress can affect the body’s environment such that healthy joint function (and other body function) is hard to maintain.
Many joint injuries can be fixed naturally, without surgery…through chiropractic adjustments.

Chiropractors correct the underlying cause of joint dysfunction so that the body can restore normal ranges of motion. Chiropractic adjustments also allow the area of pain (the surrounding soft tissues) resulting from the dysfunction to heal.

Many are familiar with the following lyrics of a popular children’s song, “The foot bone’s connected to the leg bone, the leg bone’s connected to the hip bone…” This children’s song illustrates a foundational biomechanical principle. If the bones in the body are connected, they will affect each other in a positive or negative way.

The term used to describe this relationship is the Kinetic Chain. If the feet are connected to the legs and the legs are connected to the back, then it is safe to conclude that a condition in the feet can affect the low back. If the shoulders are connected to the neck, then structural problems of the bones in the shoulder can directly affect neck pain. Because there is such an intimate relationship and influence of one joint to every other in the body, chiropractic adjustments of the joint and extremities is essential for providing quality health care.
