Sciatica: 5 Ways to Reduce Your Risk

April 19, 2016, 11:16 pm

Sciatica is persistent pain along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, down through the buttock, and into the lower leg.  The Sciatic Nerve is the longest and widest nerve in your body.  Sciatic pain usually develops from general wear and tear and use of your lower spine, not as a result of injury.

  1. Maintain proper posture:  People who have good posture help their body to have proper nerve and blood flow, which may be impaired by prolonged poor posture.  Poor posture can cause pain, aching, and impaired nerve function over time.
  2. Exercise regularly:  The risk for sciatica is lower when the muscles and tissues of your body are strong and healthy.
  3. Maintain a healthy diet and weight:  I know, the last thing you want to hear…but it is true!  The better you eat, the better the body works, and a healthy weight puts less pressure on nerves and blood flow, which directly affects sciatica.
  4. Use good body mechanics when lifting:  Injury is less common as a reason for developing sciatica.  However, when injury is involved, poor lifting techniques are a common reason for an injury that leads to sciatica.
  5. Get regular chiropractic care:  Chiropractic adjustments offer a drug-free, non-invasive treatment option as well as preventive care for sciatica.  The goal of chiropractic treatment is to restore or maintain spinal movement, which improves function while decreasing pain and inflammation.  Depending on the cause of the sciatica, your chiropractor may also use ice/heat therapy, ultrasound, and rehab exercises in addition to chiropractic adjustments in your treatment.

While it is not always possible to prevent sciatica, these suggestions improve spinal health and overall health of the body, and can greatly lower your risk for developing sciatica.

Headaches: What a Pain!

April 16, 2016, 9:55 pm

Headaches are common, NOT normal.  And because they are so common, many people think that getting a headache is just a normal part of life!  It doesn’t have to be……

Here are Four Ways to Prevent and Treat Headaches Without Medications:Headache, man holding front of head, Chiropractic and Acupuncture Institute

  1. Drink more Water!  Most people do not drink enough water each day and dehydration can lead to bad headaches. Keep a water bottle with you during the day and drink at least 8 cups (64 oz.) each day.
  2. Take a break from electronic devices.  Yes, you heard me!  When you are continuously looking at a computer, and especially looking down at a phone or tablet, the muscles in your eyes and neck get strained.  Taking short breaks and stretching your neck for a few minutes will make a difference (and feels great!)
  3. Acupuncture/acupressure.  Studies have shown acupuncture to be an effective treatment for headaches.  We have had much success at our clinic treating patients who have headaches with acupuncture or acupressure, especially when combined with chiropractic care.
  4. Chiropractic adjustments. Many people find relief from their headaches with chiropractic care.  The Institute of Chiropractic and Acupuncture Therapy has helped many people get drug-free results, drastically reducing and/or totally eliminating patient’s headaches!  Some estimates suggest that 25% of the population has a headache right now…are you one of them?

Headaches are most often a sign that something is not right in your body.  There are many types of headaches and various things can cause them. Medications may cover up the pain, but don’t correct the underlying cause. If you can treat the cause of the headache, it will go away!

Chiropractic: Do you have a Pain In The Neck?

April 11, 2016, 4:42 pm

Neck Pain, woman holding necklIs it hard to look to the left or right? Is there a constant throbbing in your head or neck? Do you notice a “grinding” sound when turning your head?

Neck Pain is one of the most common reasons people visit their chiropractic or medical doctor.  A common response to neck pain is taking pain pills or muscle relaxers to cover up the problem. However, neck pain isn’t caused by a lack of pain pills!

Studies show that one of the most effective treatments for neck pain is chiropractic adjustments. A chiropractor can find the underlying cause of your neck pain.  Chiropractors use specific chiropractic adjustments to restore proper function of the neck.  With improved function, neck pain often diminished or totally disappears, without drugs and their potential side effects.

Other remedies for neck pain include heat/ice and massage.  While these therapies can do a lot to lessen neck pain (and we highly recommend them), they will not actually correct the problem as a chiropractic adjustment can.  We recommend them in addition to receiving adjustments by your chiropractor.

You don’t have to live with Neck Pain!  Look into chiropractic today and see what it can to do help you!

CranioSacral Therapy: Does it Work?

April 4, 2016, 10:39 pm

Yes it does!  Most people know that the tailbone (Sacral Bones) can be adjusted and moved by a chiropractor.  Many people don’t know that the skull is made up of multiple bones, not one big one.  Every bone in the body can be moved and adjusted to it’s correct position, and even just a little bit makes a big difference.  The Cranial Bones are included in this.

CranioSacral Therapy can assist in treating a wide range of illnesses, pain, and dysfunction, including:Chiropractor Adjustment of Woman in White Shirt, Image

  • Migraines and Headaches
  • Chronic Neck and Back Pain
  • Stress and Tension-Related Problems
  • Infantile Disorders
  • Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Scoliosis
  • Emotional Difficulties
  • Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ)
  • Learning Disabilities
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Orthopedic Problems
  • Many other conditions

Read on to find out how CranioSacral Therapy works….

CranioSacral Therapy is a light-touch therapy that addresses restrictions in the craniosacral system, which system includes the membranes and fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. This vital system extends from the bones of the skull and face, which make up the cranium, down to the sacrum or tailbone area.

CranioSacral Therapy is done using light touch generally no more than the weight of a nickel.  A Chiropractor or CranioSacral Therapist monitors the rhythm of the craniosacral system to detect potential imbalances. The therapist then uses delicate manual techniques to release the problem areas of the craniosacral system and relieve pressure on the brain and spinal cord.  This results in a craniosacral system free of restrictions and a body that is better able to heal itself.
