Headaches: 4 Ways to Prevent and Treat them Without Medications

Headaches are common, NOT normal.  And because they are so common, many people think that getting a headache is just a normal part of life!  It doesn’t have to be……

Four Ways to Prevent and Treat Headaches Without Medications:

  1. Drink more Water!  Most people do not drink enough water every day and dehydration can lead to headaches. Keep a water bottle with you throughout the day and make sure you are drinking at least 8 cups (64 oz.) each day.
  2. Take breaks from electronic devices.  Yes, you heard me.  When you are constantly looking at a computer, and especially looking down at a phone or tablet, the muscles in your neck and eyes get strained.  Taking short breaks and stretching your neck for a minute will make a difference (and feels great!)
  3. Acupuncture/acupressure.  Studies have shown acupuncture to be an effective treatment for headaches.  We have had much success at our clinic treating headache patients with acupuncture or acupressure, especially when combined with chiropractic care.
  4. Chiropractic adjustments. Many people find headache relief with chiropractic care.  The Institute of Chiropractic and Acupuncture headache, woman in painTherapy has helped many people get drug-free results, drastically reducing or totally eliminating patient’s headaches!  Some estimates suggest that 25% of the population has a headache right now…are you one of them?

Dr. Burrup ran his first marathon in St. George on October 4th, 2014.  He lost 46 pounds in preparation for the marathon and used a simple training program that required very little time compared to most marathon training programs.

Dr. Burrup had been interested in running for a while, but had not considered a marathon until he came across a training program that did NOT take up hours and hours of his time every week.  The basic program is this: one long run each week, increasing your miles as you go, and two short 30-minute runs each week to keep up your conditioning. Dr. Burrup also lost 46 lbs in preparation to run the marathon by using the Fast Metabolism Diet by Haylie Pomroy.  Dr. Burrup has successfully used other diets in the past, but found that this one has been the easiest to stay on!  The theory behind this diet is that by changing the types of foods you eat throughout the week, you keep your metabolism guessing, which helps it to work faster.  This is similar to “muscle confusion” when weight lifting, to keep your muscles building instead of plateauing.  For more information on this diet please visit hayliepomroy.com.

5 Ways to Reduce Your Risk for Sciatica

Sciatica describes persistent pain felt along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back, down through the buttock, and into the lower leg.  The Sciatic Nerve is the longest and widest nerve in the body.  Sciatic pain usually develops as a result of general wear and tear and use of the lower spine, not as a result of injury.

  1. Maintain proper posture:  People who have good posture allow their body to have proper nerve and blood flow, which can be impaired by prolonged poor posture.  Poor posture can cause aching, pain, and impaired nerve function over time.
  2. Exercise regularly:  The risk for sciatica decreases when the muscles and tissues of the body are strong and healthy.
  3. Maintain a healthy diet and weight:  I know, the last thing you want to hear.  But it is true!  The better you eat, the better the body works, and a proper weight puts less pressure on nerves and blood flow, which can directly affect sciatica.
  4. Use good body mechanics when lifting:  Injury is less common as a reason for developing sciatica, however, when injury is involved, poor lifting techniques are a common reason for the injury that leads to sciatica.
  5. Get regular chiropractic care:  Chiropractic adjustments offer a non-invasive, drug-free treatment option and preventive care for sciatica.  The goal of chiropractic treatment is to restore or maintain spinal movement, thereby improving function while decreasing any pain and inflammation.  Depending on the cause of the sciatica, your chiropractor may also use ice/heat therapy, TENS, ultrasound, and rehabilitation exercises in addition to chiropractic adjustments in your treatment.

Neck Pain is one of the most common reasons people visit their chiropractic or medical physician.  A popular response to neck pain is taking pain relievers or muscle relaxers to cover up the problem.  However, neck pain isn’t caused by a lack of pain pills!

The downside of the benefits is that running causes its share of injuries to the body.

Tendonitis, ankle sprains, shin splints, and knee strains are a few of the many injuries brought on or exacerbated by a regular running routine.

Eating Better this New Year?

Food image for Individual Page on NutritionThis is the time of year that almost everyone starts eating better.  Sadly it usually doesn’t last very long!  What can you do to make it permanent?  Find healthy food that you like (it IS possible) and slowly replace the junk…make it a lifestyle change, a little at a time.  That is the only way to have changes that last for your health, your weight, and how you feel every day.

Many of our chronic health problems are a result of nutritional deficiencies.  Eating too much junk food and not enough nutrient rich foods. If organs in the body are not getting the nutrients they need, over time they begin to wear out and break down, ultimately leading to disease.
