Nervous About Acupuncture? See our Video….

October 31, 2015, 10:21 pm

Ever been nervous to try acupuncture?  Many people are!  Click on the video below to see an acupuncture treatment by Dr. Trent Burrup and see how small the needles really are.

Hundreds of clinical studies on the benefits of acupuncture show that it successfully treats conditions ranging from musculoskeletal problems (back pain, neck pain, and others) to nausea, migraine headache, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and infertility.

Acupuncture helps balance the flow of energy in the body, which promotes the body’s natural self-healing process.  This is done by working with the meridian systems of the body (energy channels) and specific acupuncture points on those meridians.  There are many different ways to do acupuncture and balance the flow of energy using needles, lasers, herbs, electrical stimulation, or massage.

Acupuncture is a holistic approach to health and focuses as much on the prevention of illness as on the treatment.  In Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture is used in every aspect of health care.

Dr. Trent Burrup is a chiropractor and also a certified acupuncturist through the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture.

Got NECK PAIN? We can help!

October 27, 2015, 11:43 am

Whiplash, woman holding neckIs it hard to look over your shoulder? Is there a constant throbbing in your neck or head? Do you notice a “grinding” sound as you turn your head? Sounds like you may need some help….

Neck Pain is one of the most common reasons people visit their chiropractic or medical physician.  A popular response to neck pain is taking pain relievers or muscle relaxers to cover up the problem.  However, neck pain isn’t caused by a lack of pain pills!

Studies show that one of the most effective treatments for neck pain is chiropractic adjustments. A chiropractor can locate the underlying cause of the neck pain and uses specific chiropractic adjustments to restore proper function of the neck.  With improved structure and function, neck pain often diminished or totally disappears, without drugs and their potential side effects.

Other helps for neck pain include heat/ice and massage.  While these therapies can do a lot to lessen neck pain (and we highly recommend them), they will not actually correct the problem as a chiropractic adjustment can.  We recommend them in addition to receiving adjustments by your chiropractor.

You don’t have to live with Neck Pain!  Look into chiropractic today and see what it can to do help you!

The 2nd Most Common Reason to Visit a Medical Doctor (or Chiropractor) is……

October 21, 2015, 10:25 pm

Spine with pelvis imageEighty percent of people suffer from BACK PAIN at some point in their lives.  Back pain is the second most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office (including chiropractors), outnumbered only by upper-respiratory infections.  While sports injuries or accidents can cause back pain, sometimes the simplest of movements such as picking up a pencil from the floor can have painful results.  In addition, arthritis, poor posture, obesity, and psychological stress can cause or complicate back pain.

Until recently, researchers believed that back pain will “heal” on its own.  We have learned however, that this is not true.  A recent study showed that when back pain is not treated, it may go away temporarily, but will most likely return.  Only 9% of the people who had low back pain for more than 30 days were pain free 5 years later.

If your back pain is not resolving quickly, visit your chiropractor.  Your pain will often result from mechanical problems that your chiropractor can address.  Chiropractic is a safe and effective spine pain treatment.  It reduces pain, decreases medication, rapidly advances physical therapy, and requires very few passive forms of treatment, such as bed rest.  Studies show that adjustments by a chiropractor are the most effective way to treat back pain!

The Institute of Chiropractic & Acupuncture Therapy provides care in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas including West Jordan, South Jordan, Sandy, Draper, Taylorsville, Murray, Riverton, Herriman, Bluffdale, Cottonwood Heights, Holiday, Millcreek, West Valley City, and South Salt Lake.  We also provide chiropractic and other holistic services to patients that come from the Utah County area and as far north as Logan, and even some from out of state…come experience the difference at The Institute!

Get Pain Relief with Laser Therapy (done by your local Chiropractor!)

October 17, 2015, 5:02 pm

So what is Laser Therapy?  Exactly that….a laser that uses red and near-infrared wavelengths of light to create therapeutic healing effects in the body.

Laser Therapy on elbow Laser Therapy treats a wide variety of conditions, and is especially effective with pain management.  Laser Therapy accelerates wound/injury healing, decreases inflammation, pain, and scar tissue formation.  When it comes to pain management, Laser Therapy provides dramatic results, is non-addictive and virtually free of side effects.

During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area.  This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain.  As the injured area returns to normal, function is restored and pain is relieved.

Numerous research studies show that laser treatments can help with these conditions:

Arthritis
Back Pain
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Fibromyalgia
Knee Pain
Shoulder Pain
Sports Injuries
Work or Auto Related Injuries
Soft Tissue Injuries
Tendinopathies

The 3 Things You Need to Know about Auto Accidents and Your Health

October 14, 2015, 7:58 am

Even a minor auto accident can lead to chronic pain and health problems.  If you, a friend, or a loved one has been involved in an automobile accident, here are 3 things you should know about your health.

  1. Chiropractic, acupuncture, and other holistic therapies can have a tremendous effect on pain management and restoring mobility after an accident.  The sooner you see a chiropractor after a car accident the faster the healing process occurs.Whiplash, woman holding neck
  2. Even a minor car accident can cause injury.  Never assume that you are not injured just because there is little or no damage to your car.  Seek professional care immediately from your chiropractor.
  3. The most common auto accident injury is whiplash.  Muscle aches, soreness, headaches and other symptoms associated with whiplash may not show up until 24-72 hours after the accident.   The sooner you seek chiropractic treatment, the less likely it will be that you will have severe pain or permanent damage.

Studies show that ICE applied immediately to the injured area will help keep swelling and pain to a minimum. PAIN is a protective mechanism that indicates an underlying injury or trauma to the tissue. Pain-killers only mask the sensation of pain without correcting the underlying cause.  Auto injuries limit mobility and physical independence due to pain. A delay in identifying the actual cause of pain can increase the risk of inflammation, disc degeneration, muscle atrophy and other complications. Consequently, this delays healing and also leads to stiffness, limited range of motion, and other related issues with mobility.  A chiropractor can address and treat these problems.

Dr. Trent Burrup is a chiropractor who provides auto injury treatments and other wellness therapies in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas including West Jordan, South Jordan, Sandy, Draper, Taylorsville, Murray, Riverton, Herriman, Bluffdale, Cottonwood Heights, Holiday, Millcreek, West Valley City, and South Salt Lake.  We also provide chiropractic and holistic therapies to patients that come from the Utah County area and as far north as Logan, and even some from out of state…come experience the difference at The Institute!

Got Headaches? We Can Help!

October 8, 2015, 4:24 pm

Headaches are common, NOT normal.  And because they are so common, many people think that getting a headache is just a normal part of life!  It doesn’t have to be……

Headaches are most often a sign that something is not right in your body.  There are many types of headaches and many things can cause headaches such as: stress, hormones, certain foods, preservatives, alcohol, and toxic fumes, just to name a few.  A frequent and overlooked cause of headaches is the malfunction of spinal bones in the neck and upper back…bones being out of alignment.  This can affect the nerves and blood vessels to the head.  When nerves and surrounding tissues are stretched or irritated because of misalignment, they can produce painful headaches.  Medications may cover up the pain, but do not correct the underlying structural cause.

Many people find relief and correction with chiropractic care.  The Institute of Chiropractic and Acupuncture headache, woman in painTherapy has helped many people get drug-free results, drastically reducing or totally eliminating patient’s headaches!  Some estimates suggest that 25% of the population has a headache right now…are you one of them?

For more information on how chiropractic, acupuncture, and other modalities can help your headaches, please see our What We Do page at SuperDocDC.com.

Top 10 Reasons to See a Chiropractor…or NOT to?

October 5, 2015, 5:51 pm

To See or Not to See….that is the question…adjhands

“I like my left shoulder higher than my right.”

“The tingling and numbness in my fingers is actually starting to feel good.”

“These headaches I have every day are normal.  They say so on the commercial on TV.”

“Real doctors give people shots.”

“My mom doesn’t believe in it.

“I’m tough, I can take the pain.”

“These pills make me feel good…what was the question?”

“I enjoy stress…makes me more productive even if I can’t sleep.”

“My neck feels fine, so what if I can’t turn to the left.”

“Surgery makes more sense to me.  I’ve already had my gallbladder out.  Who needs these organs anyway?”

Chiropractic is not a matter of belief or faith, it’s real and it works. Millions of people, including most professional sports teams are starting to realize this every year.

Here are 10 reasons to ACTUALLY see a chiropractor:

Auto Accidents

Studies show that seeking chiropractic care early after an accident can mean the difference between being sore and stiff for months and being back to your old self again. Even if the car accident occurred months or years ago, there is still a good chance that chiropractic care can defeat lingering pain and increase range of motion in the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Headaches

Headaches are a very common condition, but they are never “normal”. Chiropractic care can decrease the incidence and severity of headaches. The U.S. Government commissioned a study on headache at Duke University that concluded that chiropractic care is highly effective for treating head pain. Stop taking medications that cause side effects and find natural relief with gentle and effective chiropractic care.

Back Pain

Chiropractors have great results when it comes to resolving back pain. Even Consumer Reports rated Chiropractic the #1 solution to lower back pain over medical care, pharmaceuticals, acupuncture and physical therapy. Numerous studies show how patients seeking chiropractic care for low back pain get relief faster and the results last longer over time.

Neck Pain

Recently, ABC news conducted a study which revealed that Chiropractic adjustments are superior to pharmaceuticals and physical therapy when it comes to neck pain. Similar to the back pain studies, they found chiropractic patients recovered twice as fast as those receiving traditional medical care.

Pain, Tingling and/or Numbness in an Extremity, and Shoulder, Hip, and Joint Pain

Chiropractic is not just for the spine.  Many chiropractors treat problems like shoulder pain (rotator cuff injuries, shoulder separation, etc.), hip pain, and pain in knees, feet, hands, and elbows.  Chiropractic aims to remove the pressure on the nerves affected, thereby addressing the cause instead of covering up the symptoms. In most cases, Chiropractic can delay or even eliminate the need for drugs or surgery.

To Reduce Medication Dependence

Drugs and medications can have undesirable or dangerous side effects on the body and on general health.  By regularly seeking chiropractic care, you may likely reduce and sometimes even get rid of your dependence on medications.

Stress Reduction

High stress seems to be the norm for our society. Most people have a tendency to store stress in their shoulders and neck causing neck pain and headaches lowering a person’s ability to deal with more stress. Chiropractic care can assist in relaxing the body, helping individuals deal with stress better.

To Improve Sleep and Quality of Life

Sleeplessness is oftentimes caused by pain, other medical issues, emotional stress, and sometimes you just can’t sleep and don’t know why. Addressing your pain or other symptoms through chiropractic techniques can promote better quality of sleep and. Enhanced sleeping habits then can improve your immune system providing your body the ability to fight disease.

Fatigue

Fatigue can result from a general misalignment of the body which can make your body inefficient in its movement patterns, using more energy and causing fatigue.  Other physical/emotional issues, pain, etc. can also cause fatigue.  Being in good spinal health by seeing a chiropractor often results in reduced stress levels and increased energy.

Chiropractic Care is Cost Effective

A study which was published in the journal, “Spine” concluded that spinal manipulation is a low risk, cost-effective choice.  Compared to the alternatives of expensive drugs and surgery, chiropractic is much lower in cost overall.

So, you see. There is much more to chiropractic than just a “crick” in the neck. More people are seeing the problem with over medicating and covering up symptoms. People are turning to more natural forms of healthcare and focusing on prevention through diet and exercise. Chiropractic is the leading alternative to the medical model of health care. So, don’t wait until you’re in pain to see a chiropractor. That’s like waiting until you have a cavity to see your dentist!
